The House Committee on Public Education has 13 members, with jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to:


  • Public schools and the public school system of Texas and financing thereof

  • State programming of elementary and secondary education for the public school system of Texas

  • Proposals to create, change, or otherwise alter school districts of the state

  • The following state agencies: the State Board of Education, the Texas Education Agency, the Office of Compact for Education Commissioner for Texas, the Office of Southern Regional Education Compact Commissioner for Texas, the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, the State Board for Educator Certification, and the Texas School for the Deaf

    • Permanent Sub Committee: on educator quality

      • No fewer than 5 members to consider all matters pertaining to:

      • Ways to improve the quality of the existing teacher workforce

      • Ways to recruit well-qualified individuals into the workforce

      • The adequacy of existing certification programs for new teachers
